'Submerged' on the Murray River
The Submerged: stories of Australia’s shipwrecks workshops are now well underway. After a successful start in Hobart this February, the second workshop saw 30 individuals representing 18 South Australian organisations gather at Mannum, South Australia for a day of exhibition-related information sessions and networking.
Hosted by the Mannum Dock Museum, the workshop was held board the historic PS Marion. The day’s program was led by Emily Jateff, Graphic Panel Exhibition Coordinator and Em Blamey, Creative Producer, both representing the ANMM. Presentations from Amer Khan, Senior Maritime Heritage Officer, DEWNR and Sophie Parker, Objects Conservator, Artlab Australia, gave an overview of regional maritime archaeological current research, and practical advice for display of shipwreck-related objects.
The morning sessions covered the Submerged project and a 'how to' design and produce a graphic panel display. All participants then gave a brief overview of their museums—in which we discovered that Morgan Museum recently uncovered a treasure trove of historic documents from underneath the floor of their museum. This was followed by an afternoon practical session where small groups wrote, edited and presented a short shipwreck story to the assembly.
Making contact and sharing shipwreck stories with participants was a highlight of this workshop. We had representatives from museums across the state—from Kangaroo Island, Port MacDonnell, Port Lincoln and in-between.
The Submerged workshop series is delivered by the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Australian Maritime Museums Council. The next workshop will be at the Queensland Maritime Museum in Brisbane on 11 April. Please check the AMMC website for details of upcoming workshops.
