Historic Derwent class yachts sailed at the Australian Wooden Boat Festival

One of the many highlights of Hobart’s 2025 Australian Wooden Boat Festival was the display and racing of the iconic Derwent class yachts.

This class originated in Tasmania in 1927, and became known for their role in sustaining local and regional racing over many decades. These vessels faded from use from the 1970s, and many are no longer accounted for. However, the ‘D class’ has experienced a resurgence in recent years which you can read more about in this article from the ABC.

Further information about the Derwent class is available on the Australian Register of Historic Vessels.
